What age should a pagan or wiccan learn?

What age is it appropriate to begin exploring paganism? Some people feel the age should be at least 18. Some people think teens can learn as long as their parents give permission. Some pagans or wiccans grow up in pagan or wiccan families. So what is your opinion on the correct age to learn?

I think the real question that should be asked is what age should a person formalize their learning in Wicca or Paganism. I think that starting to study at any age is fine, but spellwork at least should be set aside until the person has physically, emotionally, and mentally matured. Formalized training/learning can begin in the adolescent years with parental permission (for a variety of reasons, including that adolescents can be quite easy prey for the psychopaths that use the guise of Wicca), and starting formalized training earlier really is not conducive to younger minds because of the abstract concepts involved, especially in "upper level" (for lack of a better term) Wicca. There is nothing wrong, though, in my opinion, with introducing children to the path and letting them cultivate their beliefs such as by learning basic meditation, arts and crafts, and so forth.

Re: What age should a pagan or wiccan learn?

My mother is pagan, however my father is a christian. So between the two there was a struggle. My mother gave me the option to learn it from her on free will, she would not force it upon me. My father was disappointed. I feel I want to know about as much of each religion as possible. I do however consider myself a pagan/wiccan as I have been in the practice since I was 8. I am 15 now and I do agree that magik should be put off until that person is at a somewhat experienced level so (s)he knows what they are doing. It is not easy and shouldn't be taken lightly. Although doing meditation is a nice start as well as other things. It has helped me come to understand a lot of things throughout my learning.

You both had some great points in your replies to this topic. I personally feel that it all depends on the individual. It is good to learn about other belief systems as well before settling in on a particular path. In my own family, I started exposing my children to different belief systems including paganism and wicca. Being part of a family unit working together on simple rituals and spells together was sort of a special time of learning. My children were reading cards by the age of 6 to the neighbors who were christian. Well, the neighbor's mother was not happy about them doing this while I was at work one day. It did give me the opportunity to teach them how to use their talents and when not to use them. Not everyone is welcome to the ideas of paganism or card reading and we also need to respect others beliefs if we want them to eventually respect ours. The neighbor and I eventually came to an understanding which opened communication and allowed each of us to learn about the others belief systems and we became good friends. I was able to help my neighbor see wicca as a positive religion and not something evil and she helped me to understand that no all christians wanted to burn me at the stake. I was just passing on family traditions that had been for many generations within my family.

By the way, I wanted to welcome both of you to the forum if I have not already done so.

I think that the person knows when the time is right
This should not be an impulse thing
A person will need to be sure of these steps
Its not something that attracts people a lot of people
But they tend to come from within a known group of families or people

I want to welcome thehermit to Mystical Realm, I am so glad you posted here and hope you will come and post again. Please feel free to add to any discussion or start new ones.

I agree a person knows when the time is right for them or if this path is the one for them. Some people might make a decision on impulse. However, it seems to be the exception. Most people who chose this path do so carefully considering it.

On this path, learning never stops. Family might teach the basics and some traditions. I think, each of us develops to the best of our personal abilities along the path. We add to our learning by sharing our experiences, knowledge with others too. Books and the internet have opened up new ways to share and learn from eachother but still one of the more common ways is through personal interaction.
